SR-71 blackbird
The SR-71 Blackbird is a spy plane that was virtually undetected by radar. Developed in the cold war, the SR-71 was very important especially after a U-2 spy plane was monitoring Russia was shot down. The designers of the SR-71 made a plane that could fly so high and so fast that it would be very difficult to shoot down with technology at that time; but, but they also made it almost undetectable by radar. The plane was coated with special paint that absorbed radar signals; and, the plane was made from over 90 percent titanium. The SR-71 could fly up to three times the speed of sound. It carried surveillance equipment and a two man crew. The blackbird flew intelligence gathering missions from 1975 to 1999 and was officially retired from service in September of 2002. The SR-71 is a plane we’ll never forget, from its stealth like abilities to its speed. It was truly a great airplane.
