The Gloster Meteor
The Gloster Meteor was a early jet fighter used by Great Britain as an interceptor for the V-1 bomb. The Meteor was a rival of Germany's ME-262, the first jet fighter. The Meteor was supposed to be named the Thunderbolt but the RAF thought that would cause too much confusion, because the U.S. had a plane already named the Thunderbolt. The Meteor was delivered to the 616 squadron in 1944. Starting July 27th of that year, the Meteor downed 14 V-1 flying bombs. With a maximum speed of 600 MPH this “Meteor” was fast! It was over 41 feet long and 13 feet tall with a wingspan of 43 feet. The Gloster Meteor was amazing; a real force to be reckoned with.
