North American B-25 Mitchell
The B-25 Mitchell was a light weight bomber used primarily over the skies of Europe during World War II. It was also the first U.S. airplane to bomb Japan. The Mitchell could carry up to 5000 pounds of bombs. The B-25 couldn’t fly from country to country, and mid-air refueling wasn't possible back then so they needed a place to land in-between. But the B-25 was very good at its job, it could even drop bombs at very low altitudes which was very important. 10,000 B-25 airplanes were manufactured. The Mitchell also bombed Japanese ships in the Pacific Theater of operations during WWII. It was a terrific aircraft at that time, but we don’t use it anymore. We have stealth technology and the bombers are jet powered. It’s still a memorable airplane and it helped us win WWII.
