F4U Corsair
The F4U Corsair was a versatile U.S. Navy fighter. The Navy wanted a plane that had the smallest body and the biggest engine possible. Known for its W-wing shape the Corsair was considered a beauty. The wings also folded to take up less room on an air craft carrier. It was the most produced aircraft from WWII. A total of 12,681 Corsairs were produced. The Corsair was highly feared by Japanese Zeroes. It should have been too, because the corsairs combined to down 2,140 Zeroes in about 64,000 missions which lost only 189 Corsairs. The Corsair was a piston-engine fighter that also served in the Korean War, scoring a hit on a Mig 15 jet aircraft during that war. The Corsair was taken out of service in 1965. By that time, jet aircraft replaced piston fighters; but, the F4U Corsair was legendary.
